TOLU OYETUNJIMD MPH FACS FAAP

Director, Surgical Scholars Program Director, Quality Improvement and Surgical Equity Research (QISER) Center Director, Health Outcomes Research, Department of Surgery CMKC Associate Professor of Surgery, UMKC School of Medicine, Kansas City

Hello!

I am currently an Associate Professor of Pediatric Surgery at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Medicine. I am also a pediatric surgeon and the Director of Health Outcomes Research at the Children’s Mercy Kansas City (CMKC). I am also a member of multiple academic surgical societies including the Association for Academic Surgery (AAS), Society of University Surgeons (SUS) and the American College of Surgeons, to mention a few.

I was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria. I completed my medical school in Ogun State at the Obafemi Awolowo College of Health Science, Olabisi Onabanjo University (formerly Ogun State University). A few years after, I obtained a Masters in Public Health (with concentration in Epidemiology and Biostatistics) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and spent another year in Surgical Outcomes Research in the Department of Surgery at Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, DC. Now as an academic pediatric surgeon, I combine my expertise in health services research with my clinical commitments with a goal to answer more pediatric specific population health questions. My clinical interest is in minimally invasive surgery and chest wall deformities. My research focuses more on quality improvement in pediatric surgical care delivery. I have additional interest in surgical innovation and global surgery.

Surgery

As a general and thoracic pediatric surgeon, the scope of surgery varies widely from circumcision to lobectomy (removing a lobe of the lung). I also have the privilege of operating on newborns and teenagers alike, My focus however has been on minimally invasive techniques in the performance of these procedures. Some of the procedures I perform through minimally invasive techniques are listed below but are in no way exhaustive. These are more of the commonly performed procedures.

Please click on each one to learn more about how this procedure is done at my current institution.

Research

In my current role as the Director of the Surgical Scholars Program at CMKC, I lead the surgical research enterprise of a leading academic surgical department.  I serve as a research mentor to surgical research residents who have dedicated one to two years to the pursuit of academic surgery.

Quality Improvement and Mitigation of Variation in care

My current work focuses on quality improvement and mitigation of variation in care. Lack of adherence to best available evidence significantly contributes to this.
My initial research into inappropriate surgical antibiotic prophylaxis showed huge variation and the potential role of wound classification as a poor metric to determine appropriate use.

More importantly, poor stewardship of antibiotics shows poor reliance to available evidence.
I am therefore particularly interested in factors that drive the variation in care from evidence based standard and as a vehicle for disparity and unnecessary healthcare cost.
The findings from this research will drive the push for algorithmic care delivery through evidence-based clinical pathways and protocols. Some of the publications in this area are listed below.

Surgical Equity

My other interest is in surgical equity. My recent work has focused on complicated appendicitis and associated disparities.

My recent work has focused on complicated appendicitis and associated disparities. We showed through these research efforts that disparities exist in the management of complicated appendicitis, with worse outcomes for ethnic minorities.
These will potentially lead to concerted effort to better understand the factors that drive these surgical disparities.

With our current research structure, residents are highly productive with an average of 10 manuscripts per year per resident.
We also have a medical student research program which typically has 8-10 medical students actively involved surgical research

My work has also focused on improving the quality of care in pediatric surgery by pushing advancing patient–driven
protocols that reduce hospital
length of stay without impacting quality of care. These clinical protocols are standardized and are not physician driven.

Uncomplicated Appendicitis and Gastrostomy and Intussusception

My recent work has focused on common pediatric surgical procedures like uncomplicated appendicitis and gastrostomy and
intussusception. We have shown that the hospital length of stay can be reduced significantly without compromising the quality of care and safety.

Innovation

My forage into innovation came out of challenges I noticed in my daily clinical practice. As surgeons operating on children, the repertoire of instruments are not comparable to adult surgeons and if available, are not the right size.

We therefore constantly have to deal with the an additional set of complexities introduced by the instruments that should ideally make the work easier.
The same difficulty can be seen broadly in the entire healthcare sector where the tools like EHR become more of a burden rather than a relief in the day to day clinical practice.

My surgical innovation efforts focus on device and instrument design and role of artificial intelligence in medicine.
While I am not expert in this areas, it is more of a passion and I will continue to update this page as we move along.
